Preconception Care

Maternal health at the time of conception has major implications for a pregnancy.  The first eight weeks of pregnancy are critical for fetal organ formation and development.  Up to half of pregnancies are unplanned, so by the time a pregnancy is recognized it may be too late for early interventions.  A thorough medical and family history may reveal risk factors relevant to pregnancy.  This is particularly important for women with medical disease including diabetes, chronic hypertension or autoimmune disease, among others.  Furthermore, preconception is the ideal time to consider carrier screening for genetic disease.

A preconception visit includes a thorough medical and family history and pregnancy history (if applicable).  Laboratory studies may be recommended and preconception carrier screening is discussed.  Data is reviewed at a follow-up visit where recommendations for future pregnancies are made.  Maternal Fetal consultative care for future pregnancies is offered at The Perinatal Group by referral from a primary Obstetrician.
